Internationales Schattentheater MuseumMuseum

The International Museum of Shadow Art in Schwäbisch Gmünd is the world's only museum for contemporary shadow theatre. It is a place where shadows become tangible - every Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm at Mohrengässle 6.

On two levels, the permanent and temporary exhibitions show the multifaceted art of shadow theatre and professional shadow figures from all over the world. The permanent exhibition displays traditional characters from the Far East. Most of these are part of the UNESCO cultural heritage. Works by contemporary shadow artists are shown in the temporary exhibitions. Beginning October 2023, the new temporary exhibition "Puppet Players: Stravinsky's Story of the Soldier" will be on display.

In addition, visitors can become shadow artists themselves: Eight stations invite you to experiment with light and shadow - participating and discovering is expressly desired! Explore the physics behind transforming, colourful, and moving shadows. Sit on the "silhouette chair" and create a personalized souvenir to take home, or relax by drawing on our illuminated sand tables. Another attraction is the historic vaulted cellar from the 17th century, which can be reached from within the museum.
